Mama et Moi Meets | themamaedits

Hi Everyone! Here we are again for the next instalment of Mama et Moi Meets!  This month we get to know the lovely Karran, who as it happens lives quite close by to us, here on the south coast!  Get comfy whilst we find out Karran’s inspiration to blog, who her influencers are and of course some random little facts as Mama et Moi Meets…themamaedits

Tell us a little about yourself & how your blog came about?

I’m Karran; wife to Jonny, mum to Elisabeth and Harlowe. I live on the south coast in a small village, not very exciting!
I’m a secondary school teacher as my day job and teach English, but have spent nearly the past three years on maternity leave! I trained to be a journalist when I was (much) younger and ended up taking a different route… so basically, writing has always been a passion of mine and being on maternity leave and embarking on a whole new journey of motherhood seemed like the perfect opportunity to get back to a bit of writing whilst reaching out to other mums in a similar position as me.
The blog began really as a sort of ‘path’ for me to try to figure out who I was again after becoming a mum and it’s gone on from there…it covers mum stuff, fashion and style, self confidence, baby stuff and anything else that pops into my head!

2) How do you juggle work/being a mama and keeping your blog up together?

I mainly write when the girls are asleep. Jonny and I try, as much as possible, to keep evenings to ourselves, so most of my writing happens at around 2am when everyone else is fast asleep and I’m tapping away on my phone because I’ve just had an idea for something to write about…

I find it quite difficult to regularly post items and I don’t ever want to write something for the sake of writing something, so everything you see on the blog is something I feel is worthy of a 2am edit and redraft! My style posts have fallen by the wayside lately though and I need to make more of an effort to stay on top!

3) Who are you top blogger influencers and why?

I really love Susie Verrill; she is hilarious and is always guaranteed to make me giggle. I don’t know how she is always in a good mood?! https://www.instagram.com/susiejverrill/

Ashley Wilson of @amothersedit is my style icon        https://www.instagram.com/amothersedit/, along with Pascale Banks @stylemum… I want to raid their wardrobes daily.   https://www.instagram.com/style_mum/

The lovely Jade Arif of @mother_ofall_adventures  https://www.instagram.com/mother_ofall_adventures/    is another favourite of mine; she’s just lovely, honest and her kids are just scrummy. Eidee melts my heart every time I see her little smile.

Mia of @cigarettesandcalpol   https://www.instagram.com/cigarettesandcalpol/ is another little pick me up favourite, her sense of humour just makes me laugh and she could not care less if you don’t ‘get’ her in the slightest… I could go on, but we’d be here all day… Last one, Alex of @thefrugality serious wardrobe envy..   https://www.instagram.com/thefrugality/?hl=en

4) What have been your blog high’s and low’s ?
In all honesty, I don’t think I’ve really had any lows, but a big high for me was when I posted about the high level anxiety I experienced after having Bets and everyone was just lovely. The post had been sat in my draft box for ages and I kept dithering over whether to post it or not because I felt, for the first time, that I was really putting ME out there and I didn’t want to feel exposed like that because you’re a real person with a real life… I also knew people I knew personally would read it and had no idea…
I also didn’t want to seem weak, or like I was looking for a pity party… I just wanted to share my experiences because mental health is soooooo important in the months after having a baby and it was received in exactly the way I intended.

5) Three top tips you wish you knew when you started to blog?

1. How to be more tech savvy
2. How to not be a perfectionist and go over and over the same post
3. Recognise a good idea… every day life provides many and you just don’t see it!

6) What was your weirdest pregnancy craving?

Didn’t have any at all… but I always had a packet of Haribo in my pocket!

7) What is the one thing you wish you knew before you had your baba?

That EVERYTHING would change, and that it takes a really long time to really adjust to life as a mum and that is okay…

8) If you could only have one item, what is the one thing as a Mama you couldn’t live without?

Swaddle cloths! I go on about the million uses for swaddle cloths all the time on my Instagram…

9) Last time you had a full night’s sleep?

A few weeks ago when I’d been out with friends and got quite drunk; I woke up in the morning in amazement that both girls hadn’t stirred once the whole night… Only for Jonny to tell me that they had but I slept/ snored through it all…

10) Most embarrassing Motherhood moment?

We’re not really there yet, but Bets is just getting to the age where she’s starting to tell nursery all the conversations that take place at home… and all the things that her dad does… Although, she has been known to copy a few words she shouldn’t be saying (or have heard!)

11) If you had 48 hours without the munchkins what would you do?

This is a tough call… part of me would say stay at home and enjoy a peaceful weekend at home, but I know I’d end up doing all of the housework and washing whilst it was quiet, so I’ll have to say a little European city break; Amsterdam is my favourite city in the whole world, although a little winter sun wouldn’t go amiss!!

I used to be an annual Ibiza pilgrimage maker but probably couldn’t handle a week there anymore so two days on the White Isle would do me just fine! Two days of partying and I’d need a year to recover these days!

12) What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I have a really really bad memory and obsess about forgetting things so keep a record of EVERYTHING, but weirdly, I don’t keep a diary… I’m also really bad at change that’s not on my terms… I spent NYE 1992 crying because it had been such a great year and I desperately did not want 1993 to happen; I was eleven and wrote all about it in my diary (along with a drawing of the tape cassette in our swanky new answer machine).

13) What has been the funniest mummy/daddy fails that has happened to you?

Where to start… Bets somehow always manages to do a poo in the bath when I’m not looking for a split second… she went through a phase recently of shouting ‘dog sick’ and making vomiting noises really loudly… her latest thing is doing her own make up before we go out and then spending the day with a mascara monobrow…

14) Knackered mama style tips?

Dry shampoo. Top knot. MAC concealer. Benefit blusher (Dallas). Red lipstick. Vans.
Fake it til you make it…

15 )  What destination is on your bucket list & why?

The world. The whole world. We have plans to take at least a year out when Harlowe is nearly three and travel the world… I never took a gap year when I was younger but saw a bit of the world, I want to finish what I started and what better adventure to have with your husband and two kids? Life is too short to spend it in the rat race, plus we want the girls to really LIVE!
